Check Plata (Pty) Ltd · Johannesburg, South Africa · Updated 6 September 2026

1. Who we are

CheckPlata is operated by Check Plata (Pty) Ltd, Johannesburg, South Africa. You can reach us at hello@checkplata.co.za. By using this site you agree to these terms.

2. What the service does

You give us a personalised plate combination and a province. We query the national vehicle registration system for that exact combination and email you the result. If a vehicle is registered against it, the combination is taken. If no vehicle is returned, no vehicle is currently registered against it.

3. What the service does not do

A check is not a reservation. It does not hold, reserve or secure a combination for you, and it does not register anything on your behalf. Only your provincial licensing department can allocate a personalised number, and their decision is final.

One limitation matters and we want you to know it before you pay. A combination can be reserved to someone on a PRN certificate without yet being fitted to a vehicle. In that state it is owned but invisible to a vehicle lookup, so it may be reported as not registered when it is in fact already held. This is uncommon but it does happen. Always confirm with your licensing department before spending money on the strength of a result from us.

4. Fees and payment

Each check costs R15.00, charged once. There is no subscription, no account and no stored card. Payment is processed by PayFast. We never see or hold your card details.

5. Delivery

Your result is emailed to the address you give us, normally within a minute of payment clearing. It is your responsibility to give us a working address. If the result does not arrive, check your spam folder and then contact us.

6. Refunds

If we take your payment and fail to deliver a result, email us and we will either run the check again or refund you in full. We do not refund a check that was delivered correctly simply because you did not like the answer, since the answer is the thing you paid for.

If you were charged and received nothing, quote the reference from your payment confirmation and we will sort it out.

7. Plate requests

Our request board lets a buyer who has paid for a check post the combination they were after, and lets a holder of that combination respond. We pass messages between the two parties and nothing more. We are not a party to any sale, we do not hold funds, we do not act as an agent for either side, and we do not guarantee that a person offering a plate actually owns it. Any transaction is entirely between the two of you, and any transfer must be done through a provincial licensing department. Verify everything independently before paying anyone.

8. Acceptable use

Do not use the service to harass anyone, to misrepresent ownership of a plate, or to attempt automated or bulk querying. We may decline service or remove a request at our discretion.

9. Availability

We depend on third-party systems, including the vehicle register, our payment provider and our email provider. We aim to be available at all times but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.

10. Liability

To the extent permitted by law, our liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the service is limited to the amount you paid us for the check in question. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including money you spend on registering, manufacturing or acquiring a plate on the strength of a result. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act that cannot lawfully be limited.

11. Changes

We may update these terms. The version published on this page at the time you use the service is the one that applies.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
